THE BOOKS

Here are some of the books where my writing has appeared. All were published by very kind people so please don't blame them!

WILLIAM HOPE HODGSON:
Voices from the Borderland

The premiere collection of scholarly articles about the life of William Hope Hodgson and his work. Contains a wide spectrum of classic and new articles as well as the most extensive WHH bibliography compiled to date. I co-edited this book with S.T. Joshi and Massimo Berruti as well as contributing three articles and being co-complier on the bibliography.
Published by Hippocampus Press. 2014

Strange Detective Mysteries

Strange Detective Mysteries Is a science-fiction fantasy graphic novel where H. G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini, Bat Masterton and Nikola Tesla are brought together to investigate and solve the murder of Edgar Allen Poe but actually discover a conspiracy that threatens to destroy all time and reality.

I co-wrote this with Terry Pavlet and art is by Rosario Battiloro.
Published by Caliber Comics. 2014.

Hodgson:
A Collection of Essays

This book combines several of my most important essays along with newer articles about Hodgson's life and work. Included here is the ground-breaking essay, "Writing Backwards: The Novels of William Hope Hodgson" that led to a completely new evaluation of Hodgson's novels with the revolutionary claim that THE NIGHT LAND was actually the FIRST novel that Hodgson ever wrote!  This collection provides a foundation for further criticism and study of Hodgson's life and career.

Published by Ulthar Press. 2013.

Big Top Tales
Edited by Jim Beard & John Bruening

In 1956, the Henderson & Ross Royal Circus is one of the last traveling shows of its kind, crossing the country by rail to entertain cities and towns with its amazing and varied acts. Beneath the Big Top, the circus performers play their parts for their spellbound audience, but their stories don’t end when the lights go dim…

BIG TOP TALES offers up six stories of daring drama spotlighting a handful of the Henderson & Ross Circus’ most important players: The Ringmaster! The Trapeze Artist! The Knife Thrower! The Human Skeleton! The Elephant Lady! The Boy!

I contributed "Because it is Bitter" to this great collection of pulp stories!
